Smith & Truslow Organic Italian Seasoning is USDA certified organic, freshly blended in small batches, and all of the ingredients are third-party tested for heavy metals โ€” delivering the bold, herbaceous, deeply savory combination of oregano, basil, thyme, parsley, onion, garlic, celery seed, and black pepper that makes this blend one of the most versatile, most universally beloved, and most genuinely essential seasoning blends in the American kitchen.

Our organic Italian seasoning is a carefully crafted blend of eight certified organic ingredients โ€” each one individually sourced, carefully dried to preserve its essential oils and aromatic intensity, and blended in precisely calibrated proportions to deliver the harmonious, full-spectrum Italian herb and aromatic flavor that elevates everything from a simple marinara to a slow-roasted chicken to a homemade pizza into something genuinely extraordinary. Whether you're building a classic marinara sauce, seasoning a homemade pizza, flavoring a slow-roasted chicken, adding depth to a pasta dish, seasoning a focaccia before baking, creating a versatile Italian herb marinade for the grill, building a Italian-spiced roasted vegetable preparation, seasoning a baked ziti or lasagna, adding the foundational savory depth of onion and garlic alongside the classic Italian herbs, or simply reaching for the one blend that instantly delivers the authentic character of Italian cooking in every pinch, Smith & Truslow Organic Italian Seasoning delivers a freshness, depth, and aromatic complexity that grocery store Italian seasoning blends simply cannot match.

The Eight Ingredients of Smith & Truslow Organic Italian Seasoning โ€” Why Each One Is Essential

Understanding what each of the eight ingredients contributes reveals why this specific combination delivers such complete and genuinely authentic Italian flavor. Oregano is the most assertive and most immediately recognizable Italian herb โ€” its bold, slightly peppery, resinous Mediterranean character is the defining flavor of pizza sauce, marinara, and the herb-forward preparations of Southern Italian cooking. Basil contributes the sweet, slightly clove-like, delicately floral freshness that is the signature herb of Italian cooking โ€” adding the characteristic sweetness that softens oregano's assertiveness and provides the aromatic brightness that makes Italian food so immediately appealing. Thyme adds the warm, earthy, slightly lemony versatility that makes Italian seasoning work equally well in slow-cooked braises, roasted meats, and quick pasta sauces โ€” its universal herb character tying the more assertive herbs together into a cohesive whole. Parsley contributes a clean, bright, slightly peppery green herb freshness that adds color, freshness, and a gentle herbal note that prevents the blend from becoming too heavy or too resinous. Onion provides the fundamental savory depth and natural sweetness that is the aromatic backbone of virtually every Italian preparation โ€” the ingredient that makes this blend genuinely complete rather than merely herbal. Garlic adds the deep, pungent, umami-rich savory intensity that is as essential to Italian cooking as olive oil and pasta โ€” the ingredient that makes every sauce, every soup, and every roasted preparation taste genuinely Italian rather than merely Mediterranean. Celery seed adds the subtly bitter, warmly aromatic, concentrated celery character that is a classic component of the Italian soffritto โ€” the flavor base of onion, celery, and carrot that underlies virtually every serious Italian preparation from bolognese to minestrone to osso buco. Black pepper adds the sharp, clean, aromatic heat and piperine-driven flavor enhancement properties that bring every other ingredient forward and complete the blend's authentic Italian character.

Italian Seasoning vs Greek Seasoning vs Herbes de Provence โ€” Choosing the Right Mediterranean Blend

Italian seasoning, Greek seasoning, and herbes de Provence are three of the most popular Mediterranean herb blends in the American kitchen โ€” and while they share several ingredients, they deliver meaningfully different flavor profiles and serve different culinary purposes. Italian seasoning is built on oregano, basil, thyme, and parsley as the primary herbs โ€” but Smith & Truslow's version goes further by adding the savory aromatic foundation of onion, garlic, and celery seed that makes it a complete cooking blend rather than a simple herb mix. Its flavor is bold, savory, herbaceous, and deeply reminiscent of the Italian-American cooking tradition that is among the most beloved and most practiced in American home kitchens. Greek seasoning is built on bold oregano and marjoram with lemon peel and garlic โ€” delivering the bright, citrusy, herb-forward character specific to Greek and Eastern Mediterranean cooking. Herbes de Provence is a French blend built around thyme, savory, and the defining addition of lavender โ€” delivering a floral, aromatic, elegantly French character suited to slow-roasted meats and grilled preparations. For marinara, pizza, pasta, lasagna, and the Italian-American cooking tradition, Italian seasoning is the authentic and most practical choice. For Greek souvlaki and lamb, Greek seasoning is correct. For French roasted lamb and ratatouille, herbes de Provence is the right blend. We carry all three so you can cook authentically from every Mediterranean tradition.

Why Our Organic Italian Seasoning Is Different

Most grocery store Italian seasoning blends are made from the low-quality commodity herbs โ€” grown with synthetic pesticides, irradiated to extend shelf life, and blended with four or five ingredients rather than the eight that a genuinely complete Italian seasoning requires. Most commercial versions omit onion, garlic, and celery seed entirely โ€” producing a herb blend rather than a complete cooking seasoning. Some brands use herb stems, seeds, and woody material to increase volume at the expense of the clean, leaf-only herb flavor that makes premium dried Italian seasoning so aromatic and effective. Not ours. Every lot of Smith & Truslow Organic Italian Seasoning starts with certified organic versions of all eight ingredients โ€” organic oregano, organic basil, organic thyme, organic parsley, organic onion, organic garlic, organic celery seed, and organic black pepper โ€” with nothing added. No fillers. No stems. No anticaking agents. No irradiation. All ingredients are third-party tested for heavy metals. Pure eight-ingredient blend. Authentic Italian flavor. Nothing hidden.

Storage and Shelf Life

Storage: To maximize freshness, store in a dark airtight container in a cool dry place. Once the spice is ground, flavor deteriorates with exposure to light, heat, air, humidity and time. Here are rules of thumb about the shelf life of spices and herbs >

NOTE: The plastic refill bags are not intended for long-term storage of your spices. Due to the porous nature of plastic, the essential oils that are released when a spice is ground, may react with the plastic and/or labelling inks over time.

Refill bags contain the same amount of spice as in our small glass jars. When they arrive, simply snip the corner of your bag, refill your original Smith & Truslow spice jar, apply the new label, and recycle the bag.

Product Testing

Certificates of analysis (COAs) accompany our products through the supply chain. COAs identify country of origin, certifications, best by dates, and information on product testing including microbial analysis and heavy metal testing.

If you would like to review the COA for the lot we are currently selling, please send an email to:ย customerservice@smithandtruslow.com.

As we only test ingredients, but not blends, we can only provide COA's on individual spices.
