Smith & Truslow Organic Red Pepper Flakes are USDA certified organic and third-party tested for heavy metals β€” delivering the bright, fiery, slightly fruity heat and satisfying visible texture that makes red pepper flakes one of the most universally used and instantly recognizable finishing spices in kitchens around the world.

Our organic red pepper flakes are made from premium certified organic dried red chili peppers β€” carefully selectedΒ  and dried to preserve their vibrant red color, essential oils, and characteristic fruity heat, and crushed to a coarse, irregular flake that delivers both visual appeal and the slow-building, lingering heat that makes red pepper flakes so uniquely satisfying. Whether you're finishing a homemade pizza with a generous pinch, adding heat to a classic pasta all'arrabbiata, spicing a stir-fry, seasoning a pot of chili, building a chili oil, or reaching for the shaker at your favorite Italian restaurant, Smith & Truslow organic red pepper flakes deliver a clean, bright, fruity heat and visual presence that conventional red pepper flakes simply can't match.

Red Pepper Flakes vs Cayenne vs Chili Powder β€” What's the Difference?

Red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, and chili powder are three very different hot spices β€” and using the right one makes all the difference in a dish. Red pepper flakes are coarsely crushed dried red chili peppers β€” visible flakes that deliver a slow-building, slightly fruity heat with a textural presence in the dish. They are primarily a finishing spice and a cooking spice in Italian, Korean, and Chinese cuisine β€” added at the end of cooking or directly to the table for customizable heat. Cayenne pepper is a finely ground single-ingredient spice that delivers intense, immediate, penetrating heat with no textural presence β€” used to add pure heat rather than flavor complexity. Chili powder is a multi-ingredient blend of chili peppers, cumin, garlic, and oregano β€” designed to season an entire dish rather than add targeted heat. For Italian cooking, pizza, and dishes where you want visible heat and a fruity pepper character, red pepper flakes are the right choice every time. For dishes where you want invisible heat distribution, reach for cayenne. For full Tex-Mex seasoning, reach for chili powder.

Why Our Organic Red Pepper Flakes Are Different

Most conventional red pepper flakes are made from peppers grown with synthetic pesticides, processed with anticaking agents, and packaged months or years before reaching your kitchen β€” losing the vibrant red color, essential oils, and fruity heat character that make freshly processed red pepper flakes so much more alive than the faded, dusty flakes in a grocery store shaker. Not ours. Every lot of Smith & Truslow organic red pepper flakes is made from 100% certified organic dried red chili peppers with nothing added β€” no anticaking agents, no fillers, no irradiation β€” and tested by an accredited third-party lab against heavy metal specifications more stringent than industry standards. Vibrant color. Fruity heat. Nothing hidden.

Storage and Shelf Life

Storage: To maximize freshness, store in a dark airtight container in a cool dry place. Once the spice is ground, flavor deteriorates with exposure to light, heat, air, humidity and time. Here are rules of thumb about the shelf life of spices and herbs >

NOTE: The plastic refill bags are not intended for long-term storage of your spices. Due to the porous nature of plastic, the essential oils that are released when a spice is ground, may react with the plastic and/or labelling inks over time.

Refill bags contain the same amount of spice as in our small glass jars. When they arrive, simply snip the corner of your bag, refill your original Smith & Truslow spice jar, apply the new label, and recycle the bag.

Product Testing

Certificates of analysis (COAs) accompany our products through the supply chain. COAs identify country of origin, certifications, best by dates, and information on product testing including microbial analysis and heavy metal testing.

If you would like to review the COA for the lot we are currently selling, please send an email to:Β customerservice@smithandtruslow.com.

As we only test ingredients, but not blends, we can only provide COA's on individual spices.
